Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can these dumbells be dropped to the ground after a set in the manner that you can with traditional dumbells?

Be careful NOT to drop or allow these dumbbells to fall onto a hard surface. I placed my Select Tech 552 dumbbells on my weight bench between sets, and one of the dumbbells rolled slightly and fell on the concrete floor so about a 2-foot fall (or so). As a result, a tiny tab inside the locking mechanism snapped off and that particular weight setting no longer works for that dumbbell. I imagine the same thing would happen if you dropped the 1090s onto the floor.

The specific result is that if I dial up 20 lbs on that dumbbell, the plate needed on one end of the dumbbell no longer stays locked in place so I get an unbalanced load for that dumbbell. Kind of a nuisance (self-inflicted of course) and it looks pretty much impossible to fix. I tried super-gluing the tab back into place, but it won’t stand up to the weight load. In any case, I still love this product and have used these weights 3 or 4 times per week for several years.

The page says Bowflex Select Tech 1090 (single). The “SINGLE” part is confusing. If I order I will get 2 dumbbells, right?

This person is a scam artist using deceptive measures to price gouge the public.

Dumbbells are typically sold by the pair. Go on the Bowflex website and search for Bowflex SelectTech 1090. $759 for the pair.

This person is selling one dumbbell for $615. While It is listed as a “single”, the item description states: “Each dumbbell adjusts from 10 pounds to 90 pounds.” This gives the impression that there are two dumbbells and one single “set.” This is deceptive. There aren’t many people out there who would pay $600+ for one dumbbell. The seller knows this.

One of the biggest complaints in the reviews is that the plastic locking mechanism tends to break. Is this really that flimsy?

The plastic locking mechanism will inevitably break. Perhaps not if you set them down gently and carefully in their stands each time. But seriously, if you are working out with 90-pound dumbbells you are not in the same mode as you would be tidying your desk drawer.

The plastic discs are reinforced with metal but it stops short of the collar around the spindle. The spindle itself is metal. This plastic/metal interface is the fatal error of modern manufacture. Look around at the things that have failed in your home. I would bet the plastic/metal interface is at fault in many.

When I contacted the seller after placing my order to question the confusion, they were quick to dismiss my concern and stated that the item already had shipped. The item, in fact, had not shipped. Only a label had been created but the item was not picked up yet. The seller was quick to claim it had shipped and collected their money without making any attempt whatsoever to collectively work on a solution.

Does anyone know if these are the “post-recall” 1090s? Bowflex issued a safety recall in 2012, just wondering if these are old stock or new.

I didn’t know there was a recall. We were not happy with this product because the big weight on one of the dumbbells fell off and landed on my son’s foot.

Since the locking mechanism is a huge concern, are the plates sturdy enough to grab onto for tricep extensions?

I have been using my set of 1090’s for about 6 months and I haven’t yet had a problem with the locking mechanism. I also don’t throw or drop my weights. We have been extremely happy with this set.

Are these the current model? the prior ones were recalled for slipping out of the sleeve while using which made them quite dangerous.

They are all quite dangerous. They have not addressed the causes of the weights falling out: 1. There is a small tab on each plate by which it is held. When the vinyl wears off this tab, there is enough clearance for the plate to drop out.

This will occur unexpectedly in the midst of lifting. 2. Any stress on the plates in a plane parallel to the spindle can break the selector disc. If the disc is completely separated from the collar around the spindle, the weight will fall out immediately. If it is only partially severed, it will wobble on the spindle and allow a plate to drop during exercise as in case 1.

What is the length of the 1090 dumbbell?

About 17-17.5 inches from dial to dial.

Buying from Amazon says shipping in 4-5 months.

Correct. Amazon itself is currently out of stock on this item if the shipping time is 4-5 months. The demand for this product is very high so most likely all third-party sellers on Amazon like us, Bear Rocks Merchandise, will be out of stock soon as well

Are these dumbbells great for DB press? Worried about the length and tapping at the top of the press?

How wide are you? Small-framed individuals may encounter some contact. We haven’t experienced this. 5′ 10″ 170 – 180 lbs.
